French Marigolds These are essential for pest control and soil health. Their roots kill tiny harmful worms in the ground, while their strong scent hides nearby plants from flies and aphids. They are best grown near tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes, but should be kept away from beans and peas as they can slow their growth.
Onion Chives Chives act as a natural bug repellent and scent masker. Their onion smell hides the scent of nearby crops so pests like carrot flies cannot find them. They thrive near carrots, roses, and apple trees but will stunt the growth of beans and peas.
Dwarf Nasturtiums These serve as both a decoy plant and a ground cover. Aphids prefer them over vegetables, so they act as a shield while also scaring off squash bugs and beetles. Plant them with squash, cucumbers, kale, and cabbage, but avoid putting them near small or slow-growing greens that might be smothered by their fast growth.
Lime Basil This variety acts as a bug deterrent and flavor booster. The oils in its leaves keep flies and mosquitoes away, and planting it near tomatoes is known to improve the taste of the fruit. It pairs well with tomatoes and bell peppers.
German Chamomile Chamomile attracts beneficial insects. It's small, daisy-like flowers are a primary food source for hoverflies and wasps that prey on aphids and other soft-bodied pests. When planted near cabbage, broccoli, and onions, it improves growth and overall vigor. It is best grown near brassicas, onions, and cucumbers,
Royal Carpet Alyssum Alyssum is excellent for attracting beneficial bugs and stopping weeds. The flowers bring in insects that eat aphids, and because it grows low and thick, it acts like a carpet to suppress weed growth. It works well with lettuce, broccoli, and Swiss chard and has no known negative interactions.
