Valerian Seeds - Lubelski
(Valeriana officinalis 'Lubelski') Perennial. Zones 4-9.
Attention herbal medicine crafters, tea brewers, and magical sleep folks!
'Lubelski' Valerian seeds are the best choice if you've ever wanted to grow larger and/or more potent valerian roots. This open-pollinated Valerian cultivar from Poland is high yielding; up to 1kg of fresh root per plant, and has the highest Valeriana essential oil content. This is an easy to grow plant that will establish itself in your garden and be available for you year after year.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before mid Spring. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors, in mid Spring. OR direct sow outdoors in Fall or early Spring.
GERMINATION: 7-21 days. Seeds require light to germinate. Keep soil moist until germination.
SEEDING: Sow seeds 3/8-1/2” deep. Space plants 12-18” apart. Space rows 3’ apart.
GROWING: Full sun to partial shade. Tolerates many soil types, but nutrient rich, well-draining is best. Plants can grow 4-6 feet tall and will easily self-seed. Cut back flowers to direct further energy to the roots.
HARVESTING: Roots can be pulled their second Fall, once foliage starts to die back. Dry clean roots in a hot, dry area. Main root will die back in the winter if left untouched and new growths will appear in the spring around its base.
** Lubelski cultivar growing tip: Great results in yield were shown after seeds were started in outdoor beds at the end of summer. Followed by transplanting the plants into the soil in the Fall to overwinter until the following spring.
