(Hovenia dulcis) Perennial. Zones 5 - 7.
Rhamnaceae (Buckthorn) Family. Native range—Japan and Eastern China.
Can grow 10-30 feet tall. Their ’fruit’ resembles raisins when dried, both visually and sweet flavour. Be mindful of location, plants can spread through tubers when mature.

SEED PRETREATMENT: Rub seeds on fine sandpaper or gently nick seed coat with a knife. Then, soak seeds for 48 hours, start with hot tap water. Replace with fresh hot tap water after 24 hours. Mix seeds with moist soil 4x seeds volume. Place in a plastic bag, covered tray/cells or container.
STRATIFICATION: 90 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator, preferably in a veggie crisper. Inspect periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds on the soil surface. Seeds require light to germinate. Temperature of about 20°C is ideal for germination. Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: Generally occurs in 7-30 days.
