(Juglans sieboldiana cordiformis) Perennial. Zones 5 - 8.
The Heartnut tree is named for the shape of the nut - a flattened heart-shaped ( more or less ) nut that easily splits into two halves, like two sides of a locket. Originally native to Japan, Heartnut is a genetic variation of the Japanese Walnut, but it is well suited to our Northern climates.
The Heartnut kernel is creamy and white, with a smooth, oily texture and deliciously sweet flavour! Like other walnut varieties, heart nuts are high in omega-3s and antioxidants, as well as protein, fibre, and heart healthy fats. Toast the nuts for deeper flavour, chop, and sprinkle on salads, oatmeal, fruit crisps and yogurt. Heart nuts are great in place of pine nuts in pesto!
Another special quality of the Heartnut tree is its amazing ability to sequester carbon. One Heart Nut tree will pull more carbon dioxide out of the air than 1000 conifer trees! It grows vigorously and will produce nuts after 3-5 years - larger crops when planted together.
** Please note that all members of the Juglans family (Butternuts, walnuts, heartnuts, pecans, etc.) create a protective substance in their roots called Juglone. This can kill certain other plant species within the root zone.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moistened grow medium equal to 3-4 times seed volume. Place in a plastic bag or container.
