Hackberry Seeds - Northern Hackberry
(Celtis occidentalis) Perennial. Hardy to zone 3.
Elm Family. Native range—Manitoba to southern Quebec. Trees most often reach 30-60 feet, but can grow up to 150 feet tall. Beautiful light-colored hardwood, great for lumber. Fast grower, mature crown is rounded.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow outdoors in Fall, mulch beds. If sowing indoors...
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moistened grow medium 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag, covered tray/cells or container.
STRATIFICATION: 90 days cold/moist (5°C), in your fridge is a good spot for this. Inspect periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 3/8” deep. Alternate soil temperatures during the day (15-20°C) and night (10-15°C). Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 60-75 days.
GROWING: Full sun. Drought tolerant. Tolerant of various soils.
