Dogwood Seeds - Evergreen
(Cornus capitata) Perennial. Zone 8. Native range—Eastern Asia. Cornus (Dogwood) Family.
Also known as Himalayan Strawberry Tree, referencing its native range and lovely Fall fruit. Trees can grow 20-40 feet tall, with a bushy habit, growing just as wide. Lovely early-Summer blooms turn into showy strawberry-esque berries in the Fall, an excellent food source for neighbourhood birds, but also ornamentally attractive. Evergreen Dogwood's glossy green leaves also turn shades of purple and red in the Fall. Can tolerate clay soil well, but prefers well-draining, sandy soils best. Full sun to partial shade.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow seeds outdoors in the Fall, mulch beds (remove mulch once seeds germinate in Spring). If starting indoors...
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Then, mix seeds with a moistened soil 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag or container.
STRATIFICATION: 90 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator, preferably in a veggie crisper. Inspect periodically for even moisture, don’t let seeds dry out during stratification period.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 3/8” deep. Alternating soil temperatures during the day (warmer than 20 °C) and night (cooler than 20°C) can help germination. Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 30-60 days.
