Cypress Seeds - Lawson's Cypress
(Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) Perennial. Zones 5 - 7.
Native range—Oregon to California, USA. These evergreen conifers typically grow 40-60 feet tall, but up to 200 feet in the wild. Beautiful dense shading foliage, can be trimmed into a hedge. Wood is strong, fragrant and tight grained.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moistened grow medium 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag, covered tray/cells or container.
STRATIFICATION: 60 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator. Inspect periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 1/8” deep. Ideally plant 2 months before final Spring frost in a cold frame or greenhouse—shaded, mulched and protected from elements. Water evenly and regularly. Soil temperature of 15°C is ideal.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 15-45 days.
GROWING: Full sun to part shade. Moist, well-draining soil.
