Catalpa Tree Seeds
(Catalpa speciosa) Deciduous. Zones 4-8.
Also known as Indian Bean Tree or Cigar tree for its long, thin seed pods, Northern Catalpa is a fabulous focal point in any landscape!
Northern Catalpa is absolutely magical with its giant heart-shaped leaves, dangling bean-like tree pods, and interesting twisting trunk and branches. In late Spring, it blooms with showstopping orchid-like fragrant white flowers with purple and yellow interior spotting. In winter, its long seed pods sway on bare branches against crisp cold skies.
This tree is a dependable beauty for even difficult corners of your landscape, like moist low spots or dry areas with poor soils. It grows quickly to 40-70 feet, tolerates many soil conditions, and does well in full sun or part shade. Catalpa wood makes great fence posts as it is very rot resistant.
