(Zelkova serrata) Perennial. Zone 6. Native range—Japan & Taiwan. Ulmaceae (Elm) Family.
Highly adaptable to urban conditions, an excellent alternative to American Elms, as it’s resistant to the detrimental Dutch Elm disease.
Japanese Zelkova is a beautiful, upward branching deciduous tree, growing 50-80 feet tall with a vase-shaped crown. Winner of the Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. Leaves turn golden in the Fall.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Then, mix seeds with moistened soil 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag or container.
STRATIFICATION: 60 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator, preferably in a veggie crisper. Inspect periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 1/4” deep. Stratified seeds can be sown in a cold frame, mulched and in part shade outdoors in early Spring. Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 30 days.
