Artemisia Seeds - Wormwood

(Artemisia absinthium) Perennial. 2 years to maturity. Zones 3-9. 

Wormwood Artemisia is an herbaceous perennial that brings texture and colour to the garden, with aromatic dusty grey-green leaves and yellow-green flowers. Traditionally used as a medicinal plant, with strengths in purging parasites.

Growth Habit: Upright growth to 6 feet height, with tall, branching stems that are woody at the base; long, serrated leaves, divided, with soft, silky hairs; and many small, drooping florets. It spreads by underground rhizomes, sending up new shoots. 

Sun Requirements: Full sun to part shade

Soil Preference: Rich, moist well drained soil.

When to Plant: Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last Spring frost OR direct seed outdoors in early Spring OR Fall. 

How to Plant:  

Direct sow: sow seeds on soil surface and cover only very lightly with soil, as seeds need light to germinate. Seeds should germinate in 21-28 days. Thin young plants 2-3 feet apart.

Transplant: sow seeds on soil surface and cover only very lightly with soil, as seeds need light to germinate. Seeds should germinate in 21-28 days. Transplant young seedlings outside in Spring and space seedlings 2-3 feet apart. 

When / How to Harvest: Harvest Wormwood in mid Summer of its second year, when flowers are in bloom. Cut the whole plant to the ground, leaving the roots. 

Uses: Wormwood has many medicinal uses.
