Valerian Seeds - Common
(Valeriana officinalis) Perennial. Zones 4 - 9.
Common Valerian Root is one of the most well known herbal sedatives. It is commonly found in calming and sleepy time teas. This is an easy to grow plant that will establish itself in your garden and be available for you year after year.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before mid Spring. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors, in mid Spring. OR direct sow outdoors in Fall or early Spring.
GERMINATION: 7-21 days. Seeds require light to germinate. Keep soil moist until germination.
SEEDING: Sow seeds 3/8-1/2” deep. Space plants 12-18” apart. Space rows 3’ apart.
GROWING: Full sun to partial shade. Tolerates many soil types, but nutrient rich, well-draining is best. Plants can grow 4-6 feet tall and will easily self-seed. Cut back flowers to direct further energy to the roots.
HARVESTING: Roots can be pulled their second Fall, once foliage starts to die back. Dry clean roots in a hot, dry area.
