Angelica is an incredibly beautiful and architectural plant in the garden. It is a multifaceted medicinal and culinary herb, with hollow, celery-like stems and large leaves and sweet liquorice-like flavour. Its white blooms are large and abundant!

*Note: Some people experience a skin reaction to this plant, so as a precaution we recommend that you wear gloves, long sleeves and long pants, and avoid skin contact when handling Angelica.

Growth Habit:  Tall, upright growth to 5 feet height with huge leaves, hollow stems and 6” flower umbrels that appear in the second year.

Sun Requirements: Full sun to part shade

Soil Preference: Rich, light, moist, well drained soil

When to Plant: Sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before last Spring frost OR direct seed outdoors in Fall OR in early Spring. 

Stratification:  Cold stratification will significantly improve germination. Chill seeds for 3 weeks at 2-4°C before sowing.

Special Considerations: Seeds require fluctuating warm and cold temperatures for the first 3 weeks to germinate.  

How to Plant:  

Direct sow:  Sow seeds on soil surface and cover only very lightly with soil, as seeds need light to germinate. Seeds should germinate in 21-30 days. Thin young seedlings 2-3 feet apart. 

Transplant: Sow seeds on soil surface and cover only very lightly with soil, as seeds need light to germinate. Seeds should germinate in 21-30 days. Transplant young seedlings outside in Spring and space 2-3 feet apart. 

When / How to Harvest: Harvest leaves carefully in the first year; roots in the Fall of the first year OR Spring of the second year; flowers, leaves, stems in the second year. 

Uses: All parts of Angelica are edible. Angelica has medicinal properties, is a beautiful cut flower in bouquets, and attracts beneficial insects and pollinators.
