Seabuckthorn Seeds

(Hippophae rhamnoides) Perennial. Zones 3 - 7.

Seabuckthorn fruit is said to have 30 times more vitamin C than oranges! These plants are heavy producers to boot! Seabuckthorn is a wonderful choice for a permaculture landscape as an edible perennial with nitrogen fixing properties.

* Seabuckthorn is a dioecious plant, meaning it takes both a female and male plant to produce fruit. With these seeds you get a 50/50 chance at each! *

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

SEED PRETREATMENT: Seeds benefit from scarification—gently scratch the seed surface with sandpaper. Then soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moistened grow medium equal to 3-4 times seed volume. Place in a plastic bag, covered tray/cells or container.

STRATIFICATION: 90 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator, preferably in a veggie crisper. Inspect periodically for even moisture.

POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 1/4” deep, ideally in a peat/perlite mix. Alternating soil temperatures during the day (30°C) and night (20°C) is beneficial for germination. Water evenly and regularly.

GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 21-30 days.
