Olive Seeds, Russian Olive
(Elaeagnus angustifolia) Decisuous. Zones 2-7. This is a truly exceptional tree! Also known as Silverberry for its silvery foliage, flowers, and berry-like fruit, Russian Olive is an exotic looking tree that will lend a Mediterranean feel to your landscape.
The dense canopy and abundant, pulpy fruit will attract rare and diverse bird species to your garden - songbirds, bohemian waxwings, pheasants, and even great horned owls.
Its twisted trunk and branches are covered with an exfoliating brown bark that is beautiful year-round. Its leaves resemble those of a willow tree and its small star shaped flowers are silvery white outside and yellowish inside, with an intoxicating fragrance! Flowers are followed in fall by an often abundant fruit crop of small, silver-scaled green fruit resembling olives.
The Russian Olive fruit looks like an olive, but tastes like a nut! The fruit is dry and very sweet, soft on the outside and crunchy on the inside with an unforgettable nutty aftertaste. In Turkey, they are enjoyed dried but are also yummy raw or cooked. They can be used to make sweet apple flavoured drinks, jams, and jellies.
Russian Olives are super nutritious - high in vitamins, essential fatty acids and flavonoids.
This is a vigorous, fast-growing tree that tolerates a wide variety of soils including both poor dry soils and wet heavy clays. It also tolerates hot summers and salty soils. It typically grows up to 20 feet.
**The Russian Olive is nitrogen fixing**
**70-90% germination** Russian Olive seeds require 9-12 weeks cold moist stratification required by seed for germination.
