Rose Seeds, Dog Rose
(Rosa canina) Deciduous. Zones 4-7. You know summer is on its way when the dog rose begins to flower. This romantic classic rose has a light, sweet scent and large pink or white five petalled blooms. Its thorny, tangled vines weave themselves around fence posts, shrubs, and trellises - their wild beauty scrambling wherever they may.
The bright red oval shaped rose hips stand out in Fall against the leafless, twisting vines. They form small clusters, each hip containing many seeds.
Dog Rose is an ancient source of folk medicine. High in vitamin C, the vibrant hips are traditionally used in syrups to boost levels and were relied on in Britain during WWII to treat deficiencies. Medical uses of the Dog Rose go back much further - to the time of Hippocrates! The hips can be used to treat kidney and urinary tract disorders, digestive ailments, arthritis, gout, fevers, and the common cold.
Dog Rose flowers are an abundant source of nectar for buzzing insects. The fragrant petals can be steeped or distilled to make a lovely and refreshing rosewater, add perfumey flavour to preserves, or an astringent lotion for sensitive skin. The hips can also be used to make nutritious, mild flavoured jams, jellies, and tea.
