Hazelnut Seeds - European

**Orders containing large seeds are not eligible for lettermail shipping.**

(Corylus avellana) Zones 4 - 8. Deciduous Nut Tree.

The European Hazelnut - or filbert - is larger than our native Beaked Hazelnut and the nut that we know are the commercial Hazelnut.

It is also a very special tree in European folklore, especially in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Hazelnuts are associated with sacred wisdom and always have Little People protecting their fruit and its gifts. If you've been planning on inviting Faeries into your space, you might just get some by growing this tree.

European Hazelnut trees are actually a suckering shrubs that do best as hazelnut thickets, so allow some space for them to spread. If you don't have much space, you can prune them to be more "tree-like".

* European & Turkish Hazelnuts are susceptible to Eastern Filbert Blight, a naturally occurring fungus in our soils. The blight causes cankers to form on the trunk and branches. Eventually, infected trees die, because of girdling. They can grow here, but if they become infected with Eastern Filbert Blight, trees typically die after ten years. Luckily European & Turkish Hazels begin bearing fruit at 2 - 5 years. Our native American Hazelnut & Beaked Hazelnut trees are only rarely affected by Eastern Filbert Blight.
