Raspberry Canes

(Rubus idaeus) Deciduous. Zone 4-8.

Raspberry is a perennial shrub with fruiting biennial canes. Also known as Red Raspberry, it is primarily grown for its tasty fruit! Modern cultivars combine the best characteristics of European and North American selections.

In Spring, Raspberry leaves unfurl and, soon after, rose-white flowers open in clusters. Both the fruit and leaves are incredibly nutrient dense and have been used medicinally for centuries. Raspberry leaf is highly astringent and often used in nourishing herbal infusion or vinegars. Red raspberry leaf tea is often taken medicinally during pregnancy and labour. Raspberry leaves should be harvested when they look vibrant, ideally before the flowers emerge.

The ruby red fruit is a powerful antioxidant, high in flavonoids, and known to support heart health and relax blood vessels. Raspberries are also high in fibre and vitamin C. The plump berries are tangy and delicious and make the most delicious jam! Children love eating these jewel-like berries straight off the bush.

Raspberry canes are prickly and thicket forming, reaching 3-9 feet tall. Fruit grows only on second year canes. Regular pruning of spent canes as well as sturdy support make for much better productivity and easier harvest.

Raspberry is self pollinating as flowers have male and female parts. Raspberry is best grown in rich, slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or part shade.
