Hazelnut Seeds - Turkish
(Corylus colurna) Zones 4 - 7. Medium sized nut tree.
Of all the filberts, the Turkish Hazelnut tree is the only one that actually grows big enough to qualify as a tree. They can reach 40ft! Because of their height, nuts are usually gathered from lower branches, or after they fall.
* European & Turkish Hazelnuts are susceptible to Eastern Filbert Blight, a naturally occurring fungus in our soils. The blight causes cankers to form on the trunk and branches. Eventually, infected trees die, because of girdling. They can grow here, but if they become infected with Eastern Filbert Blight, trees typically die after ten years. Luckily European & Turkish Hazels begin bearing fruit at 2 - 5 years. Our native American Hazelnut & Beaked Hazelnut trees are only rarely affected by Eastern Filbert Blight.
