Dawn Redwood Tree Seeds

(Metasequoia glyptostroboides) Zones 4 - 8. Not a true evergreen; loses leaves in Fall.

We first met Dawn, much to our surprise, at the Halifax Public Gardens. Here on the East Coast, gentle giants like cedars, cypress and sequoias are usually trees we associate with West Coast rain forests.

Worldwide, the Dawn Redwood was though to have gone extinct millions of years ago, in fact fossils in North America date back to 20 million years. But, in the 1940s a huge, ancient Dawn Redwood was discovered in China's Shui-hsu valley. Due to rigorous conservation efforts, the Dawn Redwood population has been on the rise over the last hundred years. These incredible trees have become prominent features in gardens around the world.

Aside from being a living fossil, this unique conifer loses its leaves every Fall. The Dawn Redwood is a quick growing tree. The tallest living specimen stands at 120ft, in Hubei, China.

Germination: 60 - 80%
