(Aronia melanocarpa) Deciduous shrub. Zones 3-8.
Viking Aronia, or Black Chokeberry, is easy to grow, extremely cold hardy and self-fertile - so you only need one to yield tons of fruit.
Viking Aronia is a native edible shrub that is deer resistant - a beautiful and useful low-maintenance landscape plant. In early Spring, its pure white and fragrant blossoms are a delight to the senses; in Summer, rich, deep purple berries dangle like jewels - plump and abundant; in Fall, its foliage turns a magnificent orange.
The berries taste sour fresh off the bush, but are super high in nutrients and antioxidants and wonderful for making jellies and medicinal syrups. Leave some berries to attract hungry birds through the Winter.
