Scotia is an early-maturing Elderberry cultivar that produces small but incredibly sweet fruit. Scotia Elderberry is smaller other cultivars and its fruit ripens somewhere in between Kent and York. Its small, black berries have high sugar content and taste a little like blueberries.
The flavourful fruits and flowers are used to make medicinal syrup, jams, jellies, elderberry wine, and elderflower cordial.
Scotia Elderberry tolerates a wide range of soils, but prefers moist humus. It will grow in medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It makes a wonderful living, edible hedge or shrub level companion in a permaculture landscape.
