Bachelor’s Button, also known as Cornflowers, can bloom in 8-12 weeks and prefer cool temperatures. The flowers are fantastic pinks, whites, reds and blues and the foliage a lovely soft gray-green. A common wildflower species, they are drought and deer resistant and make wonderful cut and dried flowers. Attractive to butterflies.

Growth Habit: Upright growth to 3 feet, fuzzy, feathery foliage, and abundant double 1-2” blooms.
Sun Requirements: Full sun
Soil Preference: Average, well-drained soil
When to Plant: Direct seed in early Spring when the soil can be worked OR start indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting out
How to Plant:
Direct sow: Sow seeds thinly in rows every 2”, ¼” deep. Cover lightly and keep the soil surface moist until seeds germinate in 14-21 days. Thin seedlings 6-9” apart.
Transplant: Sow seeds indoors in flats or containers 3-4 weeks before planting out. Seeds will sprout in 14-21 days. Move plants to bright light until ready to transplant after all risk of frost has passed.
When to Harvest: Harvest fresh flowers through Summer and into Fall.
How to Harvest: Harvest when flowers are half open. Deadhead regularly to extend flowering. Leave seed heads to encourage self-seeding.
Uses: Bachelor’s Button is an excellent fresh cut flower that also dries well. Flowers attract beneficial pollinators. Use edible flowers fresh or dried as “sprinkles” on desserts and salads.
